Swiss Chard Dal(Pappu/Parappu)

Updated: Oct 15, 2020

We try and prepare dishes from any cuisine the most authentic way possible but sometimes it’s fun to switch it up. Also, it’s always best to cook with local/ in-season vegetables and greens to get most nutrients. So we have always loved making Lentil curry with any available greens like Collard, Spinach, Mustard greens or Swiss Chard. Its different from usual Indian Lentil curry but it’s fun and easy way to sneak greens for kids 😀👌!!

Ingredients

3-4 Cups Chopped Swiss Chard

1 Cup of any available Lentils (I used Moong Dal)

2 Tomato (Chopped)

2 Small Onions(Chopped)

1 Tsp Mustard Seeds

1 Tsp Cumin Seeds

1 Tsp Turmeric Powder

1 Pinch Asafoetida (optional)

1 Tbsp Channa dal (optional)

1-2 Green Chillies ( Either Chopped or cut in halves)

2 Tsp Oil/Ghee

Salt to taste

Instructions

Instant Pot/Electric Pressure Cooker :

-Start Instant Pot on Sauté mode (5 mins), heat oil and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, green chilies, Channa dal , asefoetida, onions and cook till onions are soft.

-Add tomatoes and let it cook for a minute

-Add Turmeric Powder, salt(~1 Tsp), lentils , Swiss chard , 3-4 cups of water and mix well.

-Switch off Sauté mode and cook the mixture on HIGH Pressure Cook setting for 8 mins. -Release pressure naturally and enjoy yummy Swiss Chard and Lentil Curry!

(Almost same steps for traditional pressure cooker , just cook the mixture in Medium heat for 5 -7 Mins. The timing would be almost double if cooked directly on heat in a pan ( stir every few mins))
